A research town, nine kilometres from the capital
Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, was created by Federal Decree No. 48 of 2 November 1992. It began work in May 1993. Professor Placid C. Njoku was appointed the first vice-chancellor on 27 May 1993, and the first 82 students were admitted on 3 May.
The campus is in Umudike, about nine kilometres from Umuahia, on the Umuahia–Ikot Ekpene road, on the grounds of the former Federal College of Agriculture. It is named for Michael Okpara, premier of the Eastern Region. These photographs take in the palm avenues and the long yellow halls. The innovation building next door is UniPod, inaugurated on the same campus in 2026.
