The 17 local governments

The 17 local governments

Abia is seventeen councils. Umuahia governs from two of them. Aba trades from two more. The other thirteen carry the farms, shrines, rivers, and workshops in between.

Umuahia and Aba

How the state is divided

Abia was created on 27 August 1991. The name is four places: Aba, Bende, Isuikwuato, and Afikpo. Afikpo later joined Ebonyi. The seventeen local governments stayed.

People usually meet the state in three belts. Abia North is Arochukwu, Bende, Isuikwuato, Ohafia, and Umu Nneochi. Abia Central is Umuahia North, Umuahia South, Ikwuano, Isiala Ngwa North, and Isiala Ngwa South. Abia South is Aba North, Aba South, Osisioma Ngwa, Obi Ngwa, Ugwunagbo, Ukwa East, and Ukwa West.

Each council has a chairman, and most keep the same five departments: administration, agriculture, health, education, and works. The headquarters below are the towns where those secretariats sit.
